The Chief Judge of Lagos State frees 18 prisoners


On Tuesday, 30 June, 18 prisoners of the Kirikiri Medium Security Custodial Center were released by Chief Justice Kazeem Alogba of Lagos.


Prisoners who have been in custody since 2016 for crimes such as stealing, burglary and fraudulent conversion have been released following the directives of President Muhammadu Buhari and Chief of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad.




Heads of court were told to decongest the prisons in order to reduce the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) among prisoners.



Inmates were released under the authority of the Chief Judge under Section 1(1) of the Criminal Justice Release from Custody) (Special Provisions) Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2007. It was achieved at the "Correctional Centers Decongestion Exercise" case, conducted at J.
